Headstream sampling

Team work: Marian Pye and Hannah Burton

Fifty headstreams across Wales were sampled intensively to assess productivity and construct food webs using stable isotopes and other methods. Streams were representative of Welsh land uses and geology.

Invertebrate sampling taking place

Invertebrate sorting for stable isotope analysis

Invertebrate sampling took place throughout May and June 2012, led by the Cardiff and Queen Mary teams.

The 75 streams of  the Welsh Acid Waters Survey sampled in 1984 and 1995 were resampled to assess resilience to change  over the last 28 years.

Field work experiment

CEH Hafren flume @D. Norris

Work in Lancaster is ongoing to mount the instruments necessary to monitor hydrological and chemical variations in the 8 streams where experimental and long term dynamic investigations will take place.

The project will take advantage of the high performance existing infrastructures from the CEH sites of Plynlimon and Pontbren
